Tahun 2050 Bumi sudah Terlalu Penuh

WASHINGTON - Para peneliti di konferensi sains di AS mengatakan kalau pada tahun 2050 bumi sudah terlalu penuh untuk ditinggali.


"Perserikatan Bangsa Bangsa telah memprediksi kalau populasi global akan mencapai angka tujuh miliar pada tahun 2011, dengan angka pertumbuhan yang kebanyakan berasal dari negara-negara miskin di Afrika dan Asia Selatan," ujar John Bongaarts dari Population Council. Demikian seperti yang dikutip dari The Straits Times, Senin (21/2/2011).

"Untuk memberi makan orang-orang ini, kita harus memproduksi sebanyak mungkin makanan untuk kurun waktu 40 tahun ke depan," jelas Jason Clay dari WWF di acara tahunan American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

"Pada tahun 2050 planet Bumi mungkin jadi tak dapat 'dikenali' lagi jika tren ini terus berkelanjutan," tambah Clay.

"Populasi yang berlebihan adalah masalah besar," kata John Casterline, Director of the Initiative in Population Research di Ohio State University.

Pendapatan juga diharapkan naik untuk kurun waktu 40 tahun ke depan, yang memungkinkan untuk menambah suplai makanan.

"Orang-orang cenderung untuk memewahkan makanan mereka begitu pendapatannya naik, makan lebih banyak daging, daripada ketika mereka memiliki sedikit uang," ungkap para ahli.

Bima Sakti Miliki 50 Miliar Planet

WASHINGTON - Sejumlah ilmuwan melakukan sensus planet untuk pertama kalinya dan memperkirakan bahwa galaksi Bima Sakti memiliki setidaknya 50 miliar planet.

Dari jumlah itu, setidaknya 500 juta planet memiliki suhu yang tidak terlalu panas ataupun terlalu dingin, sehingga memungkinkan adanya kehidupan. Demikian seperti dilansir MSNBC, Minggu (20/2/2011).

Angka itu masih merupakan penghitungan awal planet yang dilakukan melalui teleskop Kepler milik NASA. Kepala peneliti William Borucki menjelaskan, itu merupakan jumlah planet yang mereka temui pada tahun pertama penghitungan.

Misi utama sensus ini, selain mendapatkan gambaran berapa banyak planet yang terdapat dalam galaksi Bima Sakti, adalah menemukan planet yang berpotensi untuk dihuni.

Borucki dan rekan-rekannya memperkirakan, satu dari dua bintang memiliki planet, dan satu dari 200 bintang memiliki planet dalam zona yang bisa dihuni. Itu hanyalah perkiraan minimum, karena bintang biasanya memiliki lebih dari satu planet, sementara Kepler belum mendapatkan gambaran planet-planet yang berada cukup jauh dari bintangnya.

Untuk mendapatkan perkiraan jumlah planet, ilmuwan menggunakan frekuensi planet yang telah mereka observasi dan mengaplikasikannya pada jumlah bintang dalam galaksi. Saat ini, diperkirakan terdapat 300 miliar bintang dalam galaksi Bima Sakti.

Matahari Lontarkan Lidah Api Terbesar ke Bumi

VIVAnews - Matahari melepaskan lidah api terbesar selama empat tahun terakhir. Letusan yang terjadi pada 14 Februari di belahan barat atau 15 Februari di kawasan timur Bumi tersebut melontarkan gelombang besar yang mengandung partikel gas bermuatan listrik ke ruang angkasa.

Badai Matahari itu juga memancarkan sinar radiasi yang akan menghantam Bumi. Kini awan raksasa yang mengandung partikel tersebut sedang mengarah ke arah planet kita.

Umumnya, Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), sebutan untuk fenomena tersebut, membutuhkan waktu 24 jam atau lebih untuk tiba di Bumi. Efeknya, radiasi itu memicu munculnya aurora borealis, atau Cahaya Utara di garis lintang atas dan kadang muncul hingga di kawasan utara Amerika Serikat.

Dari pengamatan, letusan dahsyat tersebut tercatat mencapai Class X2.2 dalam skala lidah api Matahari. Ia merupakan lidah api kelas X pertama yang hadir di aktivitas siklus Matahari yang dimulai pada tahun lalu.

Sebagai informasi, kini Matahari sedang menuju ke solar maximum atau titik di mana aktivitas di permukaan matahari sedang mencapai puncaknya, yang diperkirakan akan terjadi pada 2013 mendatang.

“Lidah api itu merupakan yang terbesar sejak 6 Desember 2006,” kata Phil Chamberlin, Deputy Project Scientist, Solar Dynamics Observatory NASA, seperti dikutip dari Space, 16 Februari 2011. “Sebelumnya muncul petunjuk bahwa akan ada peluang munculnya lidah api yang sedang sampai besar (kelas M atau lebih), namun kami terkejut saat mengetahui bahwa lidah api yang dilontarkan merupakan kelas X yang lebih besar,” ucapnya.

Lidah api kelas X merupakan tipe lidah api yang paling kuat yang bisa dilontarkan Matahari. Ada dua kategori lain di bawahnya yakni kelas M yang memiliki kekuatan medium namun cukup bertenaga, dan kelas C yang merupakan lontaran radiasi yang paling lemah.

Lontaran lidah api sebesar itu akan memancarkan sinar X, radiasi ultraviolet dosis tinggi serta menghembuskan angin Matahari ke arah Bumi.

Setibanya di Bumi, elektron dan proton dari angin Matahari akan bersinggungan dengan medan magnet dan mengarahkannya ke kutub magnetik planet ini. Gangguan tersebut dapat menghadirkan badai geomagnetik di medan magnet planet Bumi.

“Badai geomagnetik berpotensi terjadi setelah 36 hingga 48 jam setelah CME tiba di Bumi,” ucap Chamberlin.
